Fleet Week 2007 in San Francisco
In a goose-bump producing display of US military prowess, Fleet Week comes to San Francisco this weekend. The Blue Angels prescision Navy flyboys did practice maneuvers over San Fran on Thursday in preparation for their formal flying demonstrations this Saturday and Sunday.
Critics had earlier petitioned the Board of Supervisors to ban flight-team
activities over the city because of safety concerns (Angels fly as close as
18 inches apart from wingtip to canopy). The Supervisors rejected their proposal.
In addition to the Blue Angels, Fleet Week opens with a parade of warships under
the Golden Gate Bridge. Naval ships dotting San Fran piers will be open for free tours
to the public Sunday through Tuesday.
Fleet Week celebrations include air shows, Navy ship tours, the Italian Heritage Parade,
concerts, fireworks, and celebrations at Pier 39, Marina Green, and Aquatic Park.
The week’s festivities are expected to draw a million people to the San Francisco waterfront
and vantage points around the bay.
